Listening Blog Number 2
This week I listened to Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin. I chose this song because I liked how upbeat and fun it was. I think that this song sounds so happy because of the fun piano beat. Even if this song has no lyrics, it can still convey a lighthearted message. This music seems different from others of this time because of the upbeat nature. Songs from this time usual were more slow and mellow. This song is also surprising because it changes beats throughout the song. It almost sounds like two separate songs because of the way it changes throughout the song. I really like the intro of the song because it gets you hooked and excited because of how upbeat it is. This song reminds me of music I like currently like because I like piano a lot. I like how jazzy and simple it is. I think it’s good because of how different it is from other classical music and songs. It isn’t trying to be formal it just sounds fun. I think this probably appealed more normal people rather than the upper-class people. I also think this would be a fun song to dance too, which makes me like it even more.
Nice blog post! I like how you made connections of how the music sets a tone without using any lyrics. I also enjoy a nice piano sound. This song makes me feel like I'm in the olden days. when things were black and white. Although this song is simple, there are lots of things I hear in this song that make it feel complex. Like how fast pace the music is. I like when the music speaks for itself, especially with songs with no lyrics. The song makes you feel happy by just sounds, not by saying anything. This is really respectable to me. What kind of music do you listen to? And can you play the piano? I actually took a piano class in middle school, I can play the intro to fur elise. I feel like back then, they had more songs like this than there are today. Most of the songs today have lyrics to them. I wonder if that is another way music has evolved. It makes me wonder what our music today would sound like if there were lots of songs that didn't have lyrics. We are constantly making history but I wonder what songs today are going to be remembered and known to people looking back from the future.
ReplyDeleteI used to play the piano so I actually love this song even though this one is so hard to play! I think you're right a lot of the other music we have been listening to so far is a lot more melancholy or more blues like. This is upbeat and happy. I wonder if it is the syncopation that changes throughout the song or the key that makes the song sound different. The music that you like now, is that plain piano music or more like music that has piano in the background?
ReplyDeleteListening to this song at first, I also liked it pretty much immediately. The fun, upbeat tempo is catchy and makes you wanna dance! It's cool how it was created as such a foreign concept of it's time but set a precedent and changed music to what we hear more today, and as you said, the piano music that you like to listen to now.
